Adoption Policy
The Blue Mountain Humane Association is a non-profit humane organization committed to the welfare of all animals in our care, and thus considers pet ownership a serious responsibility.
In order to adopt an animal from the shelter, you must:
- Be 18 years of age or older
- Have identification showing proof of name and age
- Have the knowledge and consent of your landloard if you are a renter
- Be able and willing to spend the time and money necessary to provide training, medical treatment, and proper care for a pet you are considering to adopt.
Our Adoption Fee
The adoption fee for all dogs (except purebreed dogs or in special instances) is $98.00 which includes first shots, deworming, the spay/neuter fee if indicated, a Union County license as needed, a micro-chip, and 45 days of free pet insurance. The neutered and spayed cat adoption price is $20; if a neuter is needed, add $30, and if a spay is needed, add $52.
When you adopt your animal from the Animal Shelter, we will make an appointment at the veterinarian of your choice for the spay/neuter if needed; Animal Shelter staff will take your pet for the appointment (along with a voucher for the amount of the spay/neuter only) and you will pick your pet up from the vet.
The animals available for adoption have come from a variety of sources. Adoption guarantee: all of these animals have been examined upon entry, and their health is routinely monitored while at the shelter; but there is always a chance that an animal is incubating a disease without showing any clinical signs; therefore, we have a 30-day trial period to be sure that your new pet is healthy and compatible with your surroundings and lifestyle. If you have to return a new adoptee, we can only refund the actual cost of the adoption.
In order to assist you in finding that special pet which meets your lifestyle as well as being in the animal's best interest, you will need to provide some information to an adoption counseler who will assist you in completing the adoption process. This information includes such information as your reason for the adoption, your ability to care for your new pet, type of residence where the pet will reside, numbers and age of residence members, known allergies of persons of the residence, your experience with pet ownership, knowledge of species behavior, and local laws regarding pet ownership. The Animal Shelter Staff reserves the right to refuse adoption to anyone for any reason. No animals will be adopted to persons having an extensive history of losing, giving away, selling, or having animals injured or killed by moving vehicles. In some cases a premise inspection by an Animal Control Officer or Humane Society representative may be necessary before the adoption process can be completed.
