BMHA Board of Directors Application

Blue Mountain Humane Association is always interested in having reliable board members who are dedicated to quality animal care and their humane treatment to help set policy and formulate operational procedures for the Association and the Louise McNeely Animal Shelter which serves the Union County, Oregon region. Periodically there are openings on the Board, and we welcome those individuals who have the time and dedication to serve. Even if there is not an opening at the present time, we welcome your application for future consideration.

MISSION STATEMENT

The Blue Mountain Humane Association is a nonprofit organization with the goals of educating our community about the ethical treatment of animals and the successful operation of the Louise McNeely Animal Shelter . Our success will help assure that people and animals throughout the Union County region can coexist in safety and within the law.

INTRODUCTION

Blue Mountain Humane Association (BMHA) was founded in 1994 as a 501 (c) (3) nonprofit corporation in the State of Oregon and is governed by a Board of Directors that serves at the will of the Membership . It own s about 5 acres of land within the La Grande City Limits Gekeler Industrial Park on which the County-owned Louise McNeely Animal Shelter is sited. BMHA has operated the Animal Shelter under agreement with the County since its opening in June of 1996.

The mission of the Animal Shelter is to offer humane treatment for lost, stray, and unwanted pet animals. This includes those animals brought in by the public as well as animals impounded by local Animal Control.  BMHA contracts with Union County to house and feed these impounded animals. Roughly one half of the kennel space is reserved for animals impounded by Animal Control. If these impounded animals are not reclaimed (redeemed) by their owners they become the property of BMHA. Once these animals become the property and responsibility of BMHA they are either euthanized or adopted to qualified owners.

NEED FOR ANIMAL SHELTER

The days of housing animals in a pound and getting rid of pets by drowning, shooting or gassing with an old car engine and burying dead animals in the back yard are things of the past and now Oregon law specifies how animals will be humanely treated and euthanized. We also think that the public’s attitude toward animal care has changed and that the public now demands the humane treatment of animals.  The Animal Shelter is staffed with people who care about the humane treatment of animals, and are qualified (certified by the State) to euthanize animals. The Shelter is also regularly inspected by BMHA Board Members, Union County Animal Control, as well as the Oregon Humane Society to assure that animals entering the shelter are humanely treated at all times while in the care of the shelter staff.

There is little question that the Animal Shelter is a real asset to La Grande and Union County. Not only does it help keep the city healthier and more livable, it also tells visitors about the way we live and take care of all living creatures. People who take care of animals are also likely to take care of their fellow humans. The Shelter looks nice and it is clean. The behavior of the Staff tells visitors the animals are being treated with care.

BMHA Board of Directors would like to keep serving the public in a positive manner and would like the Shelter to continue to be a showcase facility for the community.
