Blue Mountain Humane Association
Mission Statement
"The Blue Mountain Humane Association is a nonprofit group with the goals of educating our community about the ethical treatment of animals and the successful operation of the Louise McNeely Animal Shelter. Our success will help ensure that people and animals can coexist in safety and within the law."
The Animal Shelter offers humane treatment for lost, stray, and unwanted pet animals. This includes those animals brought in by the public as well as animals impounded by local animal control. BMHA contracts with Union County to house and feed these impounded animals. Roughly one half of the kennel space is reserved for impounded animals. If these animals are not reclaimed, they become the property of the Animal Shelter.
There is little question that the Animal Shelter is a real asset to Union County. Not only does it help keep the city healthier and more livable, it als tells visitors about the way we live and take care of all living creatures -- a community that takes care of it's animals is also likely to care for their fellow humans.
Staff
Joni Neustel, Director and Education Coordinator
Joni has worked at The Animal Shelter for over seven years. She has held every position available and now is the Shelter Director half-time and the Educational Coordinator. Joni is an incredible asset to the shelter, bringing great organizational skills and incredible compassion. We are so fortunate to have Joni as our team leader.
Wilma Page, Receptionist
Wilma is such a blessing to us and has been here since we moved to our new facility. As a long-time Union County resident and the part-time receptionist, Wilma is sharp as a tack, knowing just about everyone who calls. Ask about what happened 10 years ago and Wilma can tell you. We cherish her willingness to work far beyond retirement years for the benefit of the animals.
Juliette Andrus, ACT (Animal Care Technician) I
Juliette is also a returning past employee, who worked here for a few years before trying her hand at Boise Cascade. Juliette brings experience, maturity, and a sense of humor to the staff. As the lead ACT I, Juliette is responsible for the health and well-being of the animals.
Kade Bartlett, ACT I
Born and raised in Eastern Oregon, Kade (our newest employee) has always had a passion for the well being of animals. Living in Wallowa County is quite a commute but he still makes time to volunteer to local 4-H groups and school programs. Having shadowed in vet clinics and taken classes, Kade brings a different group of skills to augment the team.
Skye Manderschied, Part-time ACT I
Skye is a part-time ACT and a part-time student. Skye brings a quiet but consistent personality to the team along with her love of and compassion for animals.
