How YOU Can Help Save Animal Lives

One of the most important things you can do is donate to the Animal Rescue. We depend almost exclusively on donations to run the facility. As you can imagine, high-save shelters are significantly more expensive to run than those that are kill facilities, because animals are cared for until they can be adopted or transferred to another high-save facility. When we became a high-save facility, we realized that it was going to cost more, but we believed that ultimately, animal lovers in Union County would support the change.

You can also donate by doing nothing more than shopping as you normally would on use the address instead and designate BMHA as the beneficiary. A portion of your purchase cost is then donated to BMHA. By doing this, you can support the shelter even if you don't want to or cannot donate in other ways at this time.

We also accept donations brought to the shelter, or you can certainly mail a donation to us. No amount is too small---every penny is welcome and very much appreciated!

We're Doing Our Part, Too

We know donors want to see their donations used in the most efficient manner possible, and they want to see most of their money go to the mission of the facility, rather than to overhead. We are vigorously and aggressively finding ways to cut costs without cutting corners, to show you as donors where the money actually goes, to reassure you that your money is being used to help save animals rather than on superfluous or unnecessary things. This is one reason we are using CrowdRise for donation management. Secure Socket Layer (SSL) encryption, which protects personal information such as credit card numbers, costs a significant amount to maintain. With CrowdRise, 100% of the donation can go directly to the Animal Rescue, and it is significantly less expensive per year than maintaining our own SSL capability. That way, more money goes to the rescue, care, and adoption of animals. We like that, and we're sure you'll agree. We have also made our financial information available on this site, so donors can see exactly where the money is going. In addition, we have begun implementing an aggressive series of cost-cutting measures to further make our operation the most efficient it can be.

Did you know...

...that for nearly five years now, the Animal Rescue has received NO monetary or financial support from the County, nor has it received financial support from any of the municipalities of Union County? We're working hard to change that, since local governments are and should be expected to support animal control issues in their borders.

Most of our expenses go directly or indirectly to animal care

For example, 74% of our expenditures for 2014, based on filed tax forms, went directly or indirectly to the mission of the Animal Rescue---animal care, feeding, kennel cleaning, rescue, transport to other facilities, etc. Overhead comes in the form of advertising, insurance, utilities, and repairs. 2014 was an especially nasty year for repairs, as broken pipes necessitated major plumbing repairs, which the County did not help with despite claiming for years that the building belongs to them.

Other Ways to Help

BECOME A VOLUNTEER: We depend so much on dedicated volunteers to do much of the work of keeping the Animal Rescue open. The more volunteers we have, the less we have to depend on paid staff. That reduces our overhead, allowing even more funds to be dedicated to the whole purpose of this facility, which is to save animals and find them new forever homes. Help us help the animals---become a volunteer. All that's required is to fill out the volunteer application and attend one training session with the Director.

BECOME A MEMBER OF BMHA: As noted in the bylaws, becoming a member of BMHA is very easy. Voting membership may be obtained by a donation of $100.00 or more, but any donation of $25.00 or more makes you a member. As a member of BMHA, you will be supporting the cause of ending animal neglect, cruelty, and abandonment in Union County, as well as assisting us in the all-important task of finding new homes for our rescued and owner-surrendered animals.

BECOME A MEMBER OF THE BMHA BOARD: We can always benefit from new ideas and new suggestions. We are currently looking for people to help with grant writing, as well as someone to function as the BMHA Treasurer. If you are a dedicated, hard-working person, seriously concerned with improving animal welfare in Union County and the surrounding area, we want to hear from you!

HELP WITH AND PARTICIPATE IN FUNDRAISERS: Fundraising is one of the ways in which we are able to raise awareness and donations for the Animal Rescue. We have several fundraisers during the year, including the Doggie Dash in the Fall and the Santa Paws event in December. Do you have an idea for a great partnership or fundraiser? Share it with us. We LOVE to hear new fundraising ideas.

USE SMILE.AMAZON.COM AND DESIGNATE BMHA AS THE RECIPIENT: By doing this, you can support the shelter whenever you make a purchase from Just make sure you use instead of the usual url. Same prices, same merchandise, ame site---but you can support a nonprofit too!
