Memorials and Estate Planning

There are numerous ways that you can help the animals of Northeast Oregon and the Animal Shelter for years to come. Please discuss these ideas with your financial planner or lawyer.

Over the past few years, BMHA has made a concerted effort to follow financially sound practices: we have established a rainy day fund and we have raised over $250,000 in endowment funds. The Animal Shelter budget for 2009 is $105,000: 45% of this budget is met with fees for services such as adoptions, redemptions, fines, or boarding charges; 45% is raised by the Board of Directors; and 10% comes from Union County (to be used for infrastructure improvements), the City of La Grande, the City of Island City, and the City of Cove. The Animal Shelter is not a county funded and operated program.

Bequests

Please consider putting us in your will. Substantial income, gift, and estate tax savings can be enjoyed through the thoughtful use of charitable estate planning techniques. Here are some suggestions:

  1. You could give us a general bequest or a percentage of your estate.
  2. You can stipulate that the money goes to our Endowment Fund, where we use only the interest (after we reach our $500.000 goal).
  3. You can specify a particular activity that you would like to see funded.
  4. You can purchase an insurance policy, wherein BMHA is the benefactor upon your death. Or you can make BMHA the benefactor of many different types of assets.
  5. You and your family could work with our estate sales specialist, who can help your survivors disperse your possessions: sorting out important personal items to be kept in the family, valuing antiques, and pricing all salable items. (limited to 2 sales annually)
  6. You could donate your vehicle to the Blue Mountain Humane Association for re-sale, with the profits of the sale used for care of the animals.
  7. You could establish a charitable lead trust -- ask your financial advisor about this option.
  8. You could consider making a donation up to $11,000/year tax exempt.

Memorials in Shelter Tales

If you would like to have a memorial for a loved one, you can make a donation to the Blue Mountain Humane Association and tell us to whom you would like the memorial dedicated -- we will make sure it appears in the next issue of our newsletter.
