On Thursday we are open from 10:00am til 2:00pm, but we are closed during legal holiday periods . . . . . please call the shelter for hours. Its not hard to find us as we are located about 0.1 mile from the Gekeler Lane junction along Highway 30 (from La Grande to Union). To guide you, there is a big red barn across the railroad tracks from us. Please see the map below:

– Shelter Operations & Policy –

        Stray, lost, or pets impounded by Union County Animal Control are cared for at the Animal Shelter by our staff of two full-time and several part-time personnel plus a number of volunteers. We have 24 dog kennels (runs), with 12 kennels dedicated to Union County Animal Control, and the balance used to house adoptable dogs. Puppies are kept in a separate room, isolated from the older dogs. The Shelter has spaces for 16 adult cats and innumerable kittens. All animals are kept for five working days before they are turned over to staff members for adoption or humane disposal. All kennels have heated floors, and the building is air-conditioned for animal comfort. A quarantine room is available for both dogs and cats to prevent the spread of disease. Additionally, a state-of-the-art crematorium is located on-site to serve the community. Deceased pet animals may be brought to the Shelter for cremation services, with the ashes preserved for return if the owner wishes.

–– Release of Animals to the Shelter ––
 Animals may be brought and released to the shelter;
however, we ask for a $25 donation to help defray expenses of pet care
as it costs about $70 per week for an animal housed at the shelter.

–– Redemption and Boarding Fees––

        BMHA has contracted with Union County to hold animals brought to it by County
and City law enforcement officers. Please click below for a schedule of fees which are set by Union County Offices and can not be changed by the Shelter Staff. Please contact your Union County Commissioners if you have a complaint about the charges or wish to appeal your citation or fees charged.
