Volunteer Guidelines

Volunteer Hours:
Tuesday-Saturday 10:00am - 4:00pm. Thursdays 10:00-1:00pm

During your time at the shelter, we request that you follow these guidelines:

  • Volunteers must be 16 years of age or older. A parent must sign a waiver for those under 18 years of age. Volunteers under 16 yrs of age require adult supervision at all times.
  • Volunteer Orientation is mandatory prior to becoming an active volunteer. This is scheduled on a per need basis by the Volunteer Coordinator. The front desk can schedule your appointment.
  • Dress with your duties in mind. Safety first! Dog handlers must wear long pants, shirts and closed toed shoes. Ear protection, safety glasses and gloves can be provided where warranted.
  • Fill out your “time sheet” in the volunteer room and wear a Volunteer Name Tag as provided.  Check in with the front desk in case they have any emergency needs.
  • We request that you do not get involved with the public beyond basic information. The Staff members have full knowledge of the animal’s history and very possibly the potential adopter’s history regarding pet ownership; it is their job to assist the public.
  • Greet our visitor(s)  and assist them with the following directions:

Cats - Show them the cat area and assist them with taking a cat to our play room if desired. Adoption fees are posted on each cage. Check with the staff in case we are running any specials that day.

Dogs – Visitors must sign in at the front desk with their Driver’s License number or SS number before entering the adoption area. After clearance by the Staff Associate, please direct them to the kennels (ear plugs provided upon request). You can assist them if they wish to take a dog to our outside area. It is important to advise them that they are must not leave the animal alone and must return it back to the appropriate kennel. Only one dog is allowed out at a time. An animal can also be taken into the “quite room”.

Off limits areas to the Public and Volunteers are: Stray dog side, cat isolation and all exams rooms. These animals have not been temperament tested and/or may be ill. Direct any inquires regarding lost and found pets to a Staff Associate.

    • Volunteers are welcome to walk, bath, and socialize the dogs. Use thewalk board” posted on each kennel to record when that dog was last walked. The indoor quite room also may be used to socialize a dog. The small pool outside can be washed out and replaced with fresh water from the hose.

    • Volunteers are welcome to socialize with the cats and kittens. You can have group playtime by taking all the kittens from the same cage into the playroom together. Please check with a Staff Member if you wish to put any adult cats together; as not all are spay/neutered and/or get along w/other felines. Please pick up and clean up after your activities and place the cat(s) back into their assigned cage.

    • The cleaning of dog and cat kennels requires constant attention and we greatly appreciate your help to maintain a clean environment in both our animal and public areas. Please check with a Staff Member before cleaning on the dogs’ side. Washing of a canine may be done at any time in the grooming room.

    • They all deserve our love and care. Is important that you not give preferential treatment to any animal over another. Don’t forget to check the walking list to assure the dogs get equal attention.
    • No one with a drug charge or history of violence can volunteer. Consumption of alcoholic beverages is prohibited while representing the Shelter or BMHA.
    • Volunteers must not speak to the press regarding BMHA without permission and or approval of the Shelter Director.
    • Volunteers must not handle Shelter paperwork unless specifically requested to do so by the Shelter Director and/or Volunteer Coordinator.
    • Any abuse of the animals housed in the Shelter, whether physical, verbal or otherwise, will be basis for immediate dismissal from our volunteer program and refusal for future admittance.
    • The Shelter is a non-smoking facility. Please ask where smoking is permitted on the grounds. Eating and drinking limited to the volunteer room only.
    • Fund Raisers are an important function in maintaining our facility and your participation is always needed and greatly appreciated.  As a member of our Volunteer Program you may be contacted by our Volunteer Coordinator requesting your involvement. A successful event means successful adoptions and care for our needy animals. Please consider offering your time when called upon.
    • A minimum time involvement is not required, however, being a volunteer is a commitment of both love and devotion that does require quality time. We request that you do not volunteer unless you are willing and able to commit at least 4 hours a month whenever and wherever possible.

Volunteering can not only enrichen and change your life,
but also the lives of some very deserving animals,

    Don’t be a volunteer drop-out . . . . .
Drop In to share your love and save a life!
